Currency volatility indicator
A volatility indicator helps you to gauge the state of a market, and in a general sense, to judge whether it suits your needs. You see, if you're the kind of trader looking for a steady, quiet ride, a low-volatility market may suit you better. On the other hand: if your trading is short-term, Volatility is the change in the returns of a currency pair over a specific period, annualized and reported in percentage terms. Volatility can be used […] Chaikin Volatility (CHV) is an indicator that was developed by Marc Chaikin. It measures volatility by looking at the price`s highs and lows in a specific time period that can be set. The exact calculation involves an Exponential Moving Average (EMA), but in general: the more the range between the highs and lows widens, the higher price volatility. Volatility indicators will tell you how large the up- and down-swings are for the traded instrument. When prices fluctuate wildly up and down there is high volatility, and when we prices do not fluctuate much, there is low volatility. Making this distinction before opening a trade is important, in order to determine the correct position size and stop level. Then the bars narrowed down to a range of about 37 pips (1st red arrow). But if I am relying on a BWI (Bollinger Bandwidth Indicator) to measure volatility, when I come around to look at this currpair, the BWI is showing me a 298 pip bandwidth (look to the right in the picture). It is too slow for me - i.e. lagging.
